Research Interests

Exploring the frontiers of medicinal biophysics and drug discovery

Human Protein–Viral Nucleic Acid Interactions

We investigate how human proteins interact with viral nucleic acids, with a particular focus on the structural mechanisms.

Non-coding RNA Structure and Function

Studying the structure-function relationship of non-coding RNAs and their role in cellular processes.

About Our Lab

The Laboratory of Medicinal Biophysics combines cutting-edge research approaches to understand molecular interactions that are critical for health and disease.

Dr. Trushar Patel is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in RNA and Protein Biophysics at the University of Lethbridge, where he leads the Laboratory of Medicinal Biophysics at the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Dr. Patel's research focuses on understanding the interactions between viral nucleic acids and host proteins, as well as investigating the structural and functional characteristics of non-coding RNAs. His interdisciplinary approach—combining biophysics, structural biology, and molecular biology—aims to uncover mechanisms underlying viral infections and nucleic acid–protein interactions. This work has important implications for the development of novel therapeutics and improving public health.

He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 38 editorials, and proceedings in leading international journals. Beyond the lab, Dr. Patel is an active advocate for science communication, policy, and public engagement. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and honours. Dr. Patel is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
